CREATORSThis website was created by Liz Mnatzaganian and Shannon Richardson, elementary education majors at Appalachian State University, in order to fulfill the course requirements for CI 2300 Designing and Constructing Media for Teaching and Learning Project. Our goal is to create an
interactive learning experience that meets specific lesson objectives in both Language Arts and Visual Arts through the integrated use of media and technology. Upon graduation, Liz hopes to teach third, fourth, or fifth grade classes. Liz has tutored children in the past in Math and Science, but her favorite subject is English. She hopes to use visual arts in the classroom while teaching because she really enjoys art. Shannon currently tutors third grade students and looks forward to being a classroom teacher in grades K-3 when she graduates. She is also studying Spanish and enjoys teaching in a multicultural classroom. |
PurposeThis website is created for elementary teachers in a North Carolina third grade classroom. It contains an interdisciplinary lesson plan that combines Language Arts and Visual Arts for third grade students. This lesson introduces the basic parts of speech (nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs) and enables students to visualize these through art (using videos, photographs, drawings, and word art). This website includes an introductory video, critical thinking questions, still photography, an interactive presentation, engaging activities, helpful teacher notes and resources, and reviews of and links to i-pad apps designed to extend and enhance learning. Through this creative lesson and the integrated media, teachers can effectively help their students understand these basic parts of speech and create artistic representations based on real-life examples. Although this detailed lesson is based on Common Core State Standards (Language Arts) and North Carolina Essential Standards (Visual Arts) for third grade, it may also be adapted for use in other elementary grades
as an art project or as a language arts review. |
Standards and Objectives
This interdisciplinary lesson meets the following objectives in Language Arts and Visual Arts as listed in the Common Core State Standards and North Carolina
Essential Standards for third grade respectively.
Language Arts Standard and Objective for Third Grade: (quoted from the Common Core State Standards for Language Arts)
Standard: “3.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.”
Objective: “3.1.a Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in general and their functions in particular sentences.”
This objective is met through the interactive teaching presentation covering these five parts of speech and through the accompanying critical thinking questions as
well as the lesson activities and ipad apps that the students can use for additional independent practice. In the interactive presentation, students will
be asked to explain the function of each part of speech and determine their role in specific sentences. Although the interactive presentation focuses primarily
on verbs as action words and adverbs as words that modify action words, the teacher may supplement the lesson to include verbs as states of being and
adverbs as words that not only modify verbs but also adjectives and other adverbs. This lesson and practice may be further expanded through the ipad apps
which help students to understand the functions of these parts of speech and apply their knowledge through individual practice. The focus on verbs as action
words helps students to connect the visual image with the written image as they use action words to describe what is happening in the pictures and videos and
create their own visual representations (art).
Visual Arts Standard and Objective for Third Grade: (quoted from the North Carolina Essential Standards for Visual Arts)
Standard: “3.V.2 Apply creative and critical thinking skills to artistic expression”
Clarifying Objective: “3.V.2.3 Create art from realistic sources of inspiration”
This objective is met through the artwork that students create to accompany their written descriptions in each activity. This artwork is modeled in the video and
follows the written segments. The drawings, paintings, and word art represent people and things in real life. For example, in “Describe that Action” students will use their own class video (taken at recess) to describe actions and create pictures as well as physically act out the event. In “Photographic Descriptions” students will take pictures of events in their own lives and then represent those “realistic sources” visually through drawings in addition to their written descriptions utilizing five parts of speech. Artwork is also incorporated in the other lesson activities.
North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards:
“Employ a wide range of techniques using information and communication technology, learning styles, and differentiated instruction.”
“Know links between grade/subject and the North Carolina Standard Course of Study” and "Relate content to other disciplines.”
This lesson also meets the above objectives for teachers quoted from the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards. These standards are met
by linking parts of speech with visual arts for third grade students through the use of communication and information technology, by utilizing a variety of
teaching methods and student activities that meet the needs of diverse learners, and by including both individual and group instruction and practice to assist
students at all levels within the classroom in mastering the lesson and extending their learning.
